Community EventsDown on the Delta Art Show
The Bank of Jackson presents "Down on the Delta," an art show featuring Jackson photographer Virginia Parks Williamson and Mississippi artist Drew Divilbiss.
A native Southerner raised in Trimble, Tennessee, Williamson says she has grown up with an appreciation for the magic of the South — the sporting culture, the food, the music, the people and the ideas. Williamson, who lives in Jackson, started photographing the Mississippi Delta a few years ago, concentrating mainly on blues musicians. She gravitated to “blues” clubs and festivals and became fascinated with not only the music, but also with the musicians themselves. Their music told stories of their Southern culture and a time when rural life was migrating toward an urban existence. Her favorite subjects include David “Honeyboy” Edwards and Pinetop Perkins, the two oldest living blues legends today. Her photographs are on exhibit at Rivertown Gallery and Palladio in Memphis.
Divilbiss lives and works in Starkville, Mississippi. He graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in Fine Art with an emphasis in painting and a minor in architecture. Over the past few years, Divilbiss received numerous awards and contributed to a variety of public/private collections all over the United States and Germany. More recently, he has been honored with positions in Professional Artist Residencies that involve workshops and demonstrations. As a young professional artist, Divilbiss strives to communicate diversity, time and space using material and process as his only two raw ingredients.
“Down on the Delta” will be on display at the bank through June 30 during normal banking hours. The bank is open from 8 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and until 5:30 on Fridays.
